Ever wondered how a trivia host gets started? I mean, when you think about it, you probably didn’t even know it was a career option back when you were deciding what you wanted to be when you grew up, did you? The entertainment industry often feels like this mysterious world that other people live in, but not like something normal everyday people can do. Right?
Here to shed a little light on all of that mystery is a Fat City Entertainment host, Dustin Ramsbottom. Journey into the world of a trivia hosting stand-up comedian with Dustin! Can you tell us a little bit about your background? I am originally from Calgary, Alberta, Canada, but I have been doing stand-up since I first took the John Candy Stage in the basement of the Second City Training Center in Toronto, Ontario in 2011. My classmates and I shot a pilot for a web series back then called Back 2 Reality about a group of imaginative movie geeks who let the movies take over their lives. It... wasn't very good. But we learned a lot! What initially drew you to the entertainment industry? As soon as I was of age (almost) to visit the local bars, and live entertainment venues in Calgary, I was fascinated by all entertainers who held a microphone, and could sway the mood of the entire venue with a whip of words, and sometimes just shouting "Can I get a 'Hell Yeah'?!" The crowd always went wild.. What skills do you think are most important to being a good trivia host? Positivity, and sense of humour (notice the Canadian U?) Being able to read the room, and adjust your style accordingly has been the greatest skill I've ever learned in any aspect of my life. There are just so many times it has helped me out. Sometimes in ways you would never expect. What is the craziest thing that has ever happened at a hosting gig? I like when we find passive entertainers hidden within our crowd. We always try to turn the spotlight back on the audience, and you will never know how they will surprise you. Imagine a Catwalk in front of you. Now what's that in the distance? Is that Right Said Fred coming around the corner? *I'm Too Sexy pumps on the stereo. 5000 bonus points for the best runway model. Go! What advice do you have for someone just starting out or even just considering hosting as an option? Hang out at a Fat City show and let us know you are interested in joining our team. Also, practice your goofy radio voice as much as possible. Tell us one random fact about you. I have one tattoo. It says "Relax" (not a Frankie Goes To Hollywood reference, just a word I never want to forget.) I'm planning another tattoo that says "Focus". I guess I am growing up. Game play is pretty similar to regular bingo, except players have to match up the song being played to one of the clues on their card. It is one part bingo, one part dance party, and two parts music trivia! Sounds like a blast, right? Trust us, it is. If you can plug into your venue’s sound system that is great, otherwise, you may need to bring your own speaker. We also suggest using a microphone for hosting, but it is not absolutely necessary especially if you know how to project your voice. You can easily insert interactive bonus rounds or prizes in your game by making people sing or dance along to the music. Remember, you are the host! Make the show your own, and it will be that much more entertaining for your group!  Last, let’s get excited about the daubers! It may not seem like they are that big of a deal, and you can surely run your show with a box of crayons, but your players will find your show that much more memorable when you whip out these multi-colored daubers. It adds just that little bit of flair that pub game players love. It can give your show an edge over the competition, especially if you are competing with a lot of venues in your area. Print your bingo sheets on colored paper to add even more fun, but just remember to make sure your print is legible and your daubers marks can be seen on whatever paper color you choose. It’s time to play!  What makes a good trivia host? Well, that can be a bit of a subjective answer as personal tastes come in to play a bit. Now obviously, a good host is one that knows the game material, is prepared with correct pronunciations and explanations for the questions and answers, is able to enunciate clearly, and has a passion for hosting and trivia. But the thing that turns a good host into a great host is adding that touch of personality, that little bit of flair. A great trivia or music bingo host understands how to inject his or her personality into the show to keep the crowd entertained! As a great host, you have to learn how to put your own twist on the material and bring the “you” factor that will create loyal players. It just means, that you gotta find your niche or your hosting personality. Do something easy like giving yourself a stage name or wearing a signature outfit. You can easily be known as the host that wears the purple pants or that rocks a funky hat. You could bring a bag of candies to toss out to your crowd when they get a question correctly! Celebrate their victory with a peppermint or make them feel a little better about being incorrect by tossing them a piece of chocolate. Easy bit of added flair. Are you an amazing baker? Then be the host that bakes a tray of muffins for the winner! Can you sing like an opera diva? Serenade your trivia crowd with an aria! Be the only singing trivia host in town. Are you amazing with accents? Let your trivia players suggest an accent, then do the whole show as a southern belle or a Scottish highlander! Are you wicked funny?
